Botanical Characteristics
Scientific name: Malpighia emarginata, belonging to the Malpighiaceae family and the genus Malpighia (specifically the fruit of Malpighia emarginata).
Origin: Native to the Caribbean region of the West Indies in tropical America, hence also known as the West Indian cherry or acerola cherry.
Plant form: An evergreen shrub or small tree, about 2-3 meters tall. It bears light red, rose-red, or white flowers, with elliptical or oval leaves.
Fruit characteristics: Berries that are green when unripe, turning from red to deep red when mature. Shaped like cherries but slightly smaller (1-2 cm in diameter), with sweet and sour, juicy flesh and a unique aroma.
